Also known historically as Peover Superior, the picturesque village of Over Peover lies in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, approximately five miles south of the historic market town of Knutsford.
Steeped in history, this ancient parish is recorded in the Domesday Book, the great survey commissioned following the Norman Conquest. However, the area's origins stretch back much further, with evidence of settlement dating to Anglo-Saxon times and beyond. The name Peover is believed to mean "Bright Stream" or "Shining Water", a reference to the Peover Eye, the river that forms part of the parish boundary and has shaped the landscape for centuries.
Over Peover is home to a rich heritage of historic buildings, farms, and estates that reflect its long-standing importance within Cheshire. Visitors and residents alike can discover more about the village's fascinating past, including the history of Peover Hall and the wider parish, in the book by Barry Wienholdt and John Mottershead, published to commemorate Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee in 2002.
Today, Over Peover remains a thriving rural community, combining its historic character with modern village life. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, the village offers a peaceful setting while remaining conveniently connected to nearby towns and transport links. Throughout the year, local events, community activities, and parish initiatives help maintain the strong sense of community that has been at the heart of village life for generations.
Whether you are a resident, a visitor, or simply interested in learning more about our parish, we hope you enjoy exploring everything that Over Peover has to offer.
