PSHE at Peover Superior Primary School
Our Vision
At Peover Superior Primary School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is fundamental in helping children develop the knowledge, skills and character needed to thrive both now and in the future.
Our ambitious, inclusive and carefully sequenced curriculum enables pupils to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health, relationships and future aspirations. We want every child to develop resilience, confidence, empathy and self-belief, whilst understanding how they can positively contribute to their school, community and the wider world.
Through a holistic approach to personal development, children learn to recognise and manage emotions, build healthy relationships, celebrate diversity, stay safe and understand their responsibilities as citizens. Our aim is that every child leaves Peover Superior equipped with the skills and knowledge to lead a healthy, safe, responsible and fulfilling life.
Our PSHE Curriculum
Our curriculum is organised around three core themes which are revisited and developed throughout a child's journey from Early Years to Year 6.
Living in the Wider World
Children develop an understanding of their place within school, their local community and the wider world. They learn about:
- Rights and responsibilities
- British Values
- Citizenship and democracy
- Environmental responsibility
- Money management and financial literacy
- Careers, work and aspirations
- Enterprise and entrepreneurship
Financial literacy is a key part of our PSHE curriculum. We utilise units from the Oak National Academy Financial Education programme to provide a progressive and practical understanding of money and personal finance. From learning about the purpose of money and distinguishing between needs and wants in the younger years, pupils go on to explore budgeting, saving, spending, borrowing, value for money and financial decision-making as they move through school.
Children are encouraged to think critically about financial choices, understand how money is managed in everyday life and develop the knowledge and confidence needed to become responsible consumers. Older pupils also explore careers, enterprise and entrepreneurship, helping them understand the connection between education, employment, income and future aspirations.
Relationships
Children learn how to build positive, respectful and healthy relationships with others. They explore:
- Families and friendships
- Respect and empathy
- Valuing difference and diversity
- Bullying and discrimination
- Personal boundaries and consent
- Safe relationships
- Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
We encourage pupils to celebrate diversity, respect different viewpoints and understand the importance of kindness, inclusion and mutual respect both online and offline.
Health and Wellbeing
Children learn how to look after their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing through learning about:
- Healthy lifestyles
- Mental health and emotional wellbeing
- Managing emotions
- Personal safety
- First aid and emergency situations
- Growing and changing
- Puberty and self-care
Our curriculum helps children develop the confidence to make healthy choices, manage challenges and seek support when needed.
Online Safety
Online Safety is taught throughout the year in both PSHE and through our Computing Curriculum across all key stages. Pupils learn how to:
- Use technology safely and responsibly
- Protect personal information
- Develop positive digital habits
- Critically evaluate online content
- Understand the influence of media
- Report concerns and seek help
We aim to develop responsible, informed and confident digital citizens who can navigate the online world safely.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE)
Relationships, Sex and Health Education is a statutory part of the primary curriculum and is delivered through our PSHE programme in an age-appropriate way.
Children learn about healthy relationships, respect, personal boundaries, privacy, safety and growing up. As pupils move through Key Stage 2, they develop an understanding of the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty, alongside the importance of self-care, hygiene and respectful relationships.
Our approach is sensitive, inclusive and designed to support children at each stage of their development.
British Values at Peover Superior
British Values are woven throughout our curriculum and school life. We help children understand what it means to be a responsible citizen through our five key principles:
Everyone Has a Voice
Children learn about democracy and understand that their opinions matter. Through class discussions, pupil leadership opportunities and participation in our Student Leadership Team, pupils learn how to express their views respectfully, listen to others and contribute positively to school life.
Rules Help Us Stay Safe and Fair
Children learn why rules and laws are important and how they help to keep people safe, respected and ready to learn. They understand the importance of fairness and responsibility within a community.
Be Yourself and Make Good Choices
Children learn about individual liberty and understand that everyone has the right to make choices whilst respecting the rights of others. We encourage independence, confidence and responsible decision-making.
Treat Others How You Want to Be Treated
Through learning about respect, empathy and positive relationships, pupils understand the importance of kindness, fairness and consideration for others.
Everyone Is Welcome
Children celebrate diversity and learn about different faiths, cultures, beliefs and backgrounds. They understand the importance of inclusion, tolerance and equality in creating a welcoming school community where everyone feels valued and respected.
How Learning Progresses Through School
Early Years Foundation Stage
Children begin by learning about belonging, friendships, feelings, healthy habits and staying safe. They develop independence, confidence and an understanding of how to interact positively with others.
Key Stage 1
Pupils learn about communities, relationships, emotions, health and wellbeing. They begin to understand responsibilities, financial concepts, personal safety and how to make positive choices.
Lower Key Stage 2
Children deepen their understanding of friendships, respect, rights and responsibilities, financial decision-making, mental wellbeing and personal safety. They develop greater independence, self-awareness and resilience.
Upper Key Stage 2
Pupils prepare for the next stage of education through learning about democracy, careers, entrepreneurship, media literacy, peer influence, discrimination, first aid, puberty and increasing independence. They develop the skills needed to navigate the opportunities and challenges of modern life with confidence.
Personal Development Beyond the Classroom
At Peover Superior Primary School, personal development extends far beyond weekly PSHE lessons. We believe children learn best when they are given opportunities to apply their knowledge, challenge themselves and contribute positively to the wider community through meaningful experiences.

Enrichment Opportunities
Our extensive enrichment programme broadens children's experiences and helps them discover new interests, talents and aspirations. Through educational visits, themed curriculum days, workshops, sporting events, community projects and visiting speakers, children develop confidence, resilience, teamwork and independence.
These experiences bring learning to life, encourage curiosity and help pupils make meaningful connections between the classroom and the wider world.
Peover Superior Mini Dukes Passport
A key part of our personal development offer is the Peover Superior Mini Dukes Passport.
The passport encourages children to challenge themselves, learn new skills and gain valuable life experiences both in and out of school. Children complete a range of activities that promote creativity, communication, independence, problem-solving, leadership, community involvement and personal responsibility.
As pupils progress through school, they build a portfolio of memorable experiences and achievements that encourage curiosity, resilience and a lifelong love of learning. The Mini Dukes Passport inspires children to step beyond their comfort zone, discover new talents and develop the confidence to embrace new opportunities.
