PSHE

PSHE Intent

PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economics Education. This is a programme which we follow in school to ensure that children keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain.

At Peover Superior Primary School the intent of our PSHE Curriculum is to deliver a programme of study which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, understand more and remember more over time.  Our curriculum is designed around three core PSHE themes:

  • Living in the Wider World - Rights and Responsibilities and Money, Work and Aspirations
  • Relationships - Online SafetyFamilies, Friendships and Safe Relationships, Valuing Difference.
  • Health and Well-being - Healthy Lifestyles and Keeping Safe (drug and alcohol education), Growing and Changing (RSE)

From September 2020, Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) is statutory for all Primary Schools and this delivered as a strand throughout our PSHE curriculum.

Our curriculum is designed to help pupils understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up today such as keeping safe online, recognising different types of families and understanding and challenging stereotypes.

We provide our pupils with opportunities for them to explore and learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. We actively promote the fundamental 5 British Values. These values are:

  1. Democracy - respect for democracy and support for participation in the democratic process.
  2. The rule of law - respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in England.
  3. Individual liberty - support and respect for the liberties of all within the law.
  4. Mutual respect
  5. Tolerance of faiths and beliefs - respect for and tolerance of different faiths and religions and other beliefs.

PSHE Design

At Peover Superior Primary School the PSHE curriculum is delivered through weekly lessons and whole-school assemblies and events, such as Anti-Bullying week, Online Safety Week, World Down Syndrome Day and Children’s Mental Health week.

When children start school in the Early Years, they are encouraged to be independent and develop self-confidence and self-awareness through circle time, sharing personal achievements, recognising and talking about their emotions and developing key social skills. During the year the children interact with a range of visitors, developing their awareness of roles within the wider society.

As children move through into Key Stage 1, they learn about different types of relationships and how to maintain good physical, mental and emotional  wellbeing. They understand about managing emotions, growing and changing and living in the wider world.

In Key Stage 2, the children further develop their understanding of relationships and good health and wellbeing. They interpret risk and pressures on behaviour and identify how to keep physically and emotionally safe on and offline. They understand about finance, enterprise and managing money.

PSHE Impact

As a result of our inclusive and diverse PSHE curriculum, children know that everyone is unique and learn how to respect the needs of themselves and others. Through collaborative work, the children understand how to work towards shared goals and how to respectively listen and appreciate other's points of view.

Our pupils know about health and wellbeing and how to make healthy choices in life. They understand about growing, changing and becoming more independent. Through whole-schools events and opportunities, they know what it means to be part of a community and contribute to living in the wider world.

By the time our pupils leave Peover Superior Primary School, they have developed a range of skills and strategies to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.

Mental Health and Well-being:

This academic year (2022_2023) out children have had the opportunity to experience Puppy Yoga/Therapy. These sessions enabled the children to connect with their mind through use of a relaxing yoga session, with relaxing music and lights, combined with Puppy Love therapy. The children thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and said how it has really helped them to relax. They were able to listen to their bodies and use their kind, caring and gentle nature to fully immerse themselves and look after the 7week old puppies.

Also this academic year, our year 4 and 5 children have taken part in Bikeability. This gives the children confidence in riding their bike safely on the roads. They become resilient and aware of the importance of listening to instructions in order to stay safe. Once again, the children thoroughly enjoyed these sessions and received badges and certificates.
