September 2018

Welcome back to a new academic year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and is raring to go for the new year ahead of us!  Welcome to the new members of Class 3 - the children coming from Year 3 into Year 4 and anyone new to Peover Superior starting in Years 4, 5 and 6.  Welcome back to last year's Year 4 and Year 5 children who are now the oldest children in the school, taking their positions in Year 5 and Year 6.  I must also wish last year's Year 6 children lots of luck for the new chapter they are embarking on at their high schools - it'll be very odd during the first few weeks without you!

This term we have a brilliant first topic called 'Memories' which focuses on the decades of the 1990s, 1980s, 1970s, 1960s, 1950s, 1940s, 1930s, 1920s and then finally we will reach World War 1.  We will find out about life before the children were born - what was in the news, the music of the times, what people wore and much, much more!  Then, to tie in with Centenary of the Armistice, we will learn about World War 1 - why it began, which countries were involved and what life was like in wartime Britain.

In English, we have two fantastic books to read this term - Private Peaceful and Goodnight Mr. Tom.  We will explore characters and settings in the books, as well as writing a variety of text types including: stories with flashbacks, newspaper reports, wartime poetry and balanced arguments.

In Maths, we will begin with place value before moving onto written methods for addition and subtraction.  We will also continue with our recall of times table facts to ensure they are quick and accurate.

It sounds like we are going to be very busy, doesn't it?  I'll update you soon on how Class 3 have settled into the new academic year.

Bye for now,

Miss Woodward
