Rights Respecting Schools

UNICEF- Rights Respecting School – Howard Primary School

What is the Rights Respecting Schools Award?

At Peover Superior Primary, we are proud to be working towards the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA). This award recognises schools that put the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of their ethos and curriculum. It supports children in becoming confident, respectful, and active global citizens.

The RRSA helps our whole school community understand the importance of children's rights and how these rights help every child grow, learn, feel safe, and be heard.

Why Are We Doing This?

  • To promote values of respect, dignity, fairness and inclusion.

  • To ensure all children know and understand their rights.

  • To embed a culture where children’s voices are heard and valued.

  • To build a learning environment where wellbeing, equality, and respect are central.

How Are We Working Towards the Award?

We are beginning our journey by:

  • Forming a Rights Respecting Steering Group made up of children, staff and governors.

  • Holding regular assemblies and class discussions focusing on specific rights.

  • Linking articles from the UNCRC to our curriculum topics, PSHE lessons, and school events.

  • Creating classroom Charters that reflect the rights most relevant to our learning environments.

  • Empowering our children to take part in decision-making and community projects.

  • Displaying rights around school to ensure they’re part of daily school life.

Rights Weaved Through the Curriculum

Each subject area will highlight links to children’s rights. For example:

  • Literacy: Reading books that reflect global citizenship and children's voices.

  • Geography: Exploring the rights of children around the world.

  • Science: Learning about access to clean water and health (Article 24).

  • History: Understanding how children's rights have changed over time.

Weekly Focus and Parental Involvement

Every week, we will highlight our ‘Right of the Week’ in our school newsletter. This will include:

  • The article from the UNCRC we’re focusing on.

  • A short explanation or question to discuss at home.

  • Ideas for how families can support this right in everyday life.

Look out for this in our newsletter and on our school noticeboard and website.

Working Together

We are excited to take this journey with our pupils, staff, parents and wider community. Achieving the Rights Respecting Schools Award is not just about recognition—it's about creating a lasting, meaningful culture of respect, kindness and inclusion.

Together, we can build a school where rights are respected and upheld every day.
